A view on a killer disease: Cancer (part 1)
Before we can begin accusing anybody we must first know what cancer is and where it came from. After doing that, we can begin our research into this killer disease and why there isn’t a cure for it yet.
History of cancer
To date the first sight of cancer we must go back to 1500 bc were the first documented case of cancer from ancient Egypt was written. The details were recorded on a papyrus, documenting eight cases of tumors occurring on the breast.
It wasn’t until 1628 were autopsies done by Harvey paved the way to learning more about human anatomy and physiology and therefore learning more about cancer tumors. And it wasn’t untill recent that we came up with threatments for cancer.
What is Cancer?
It is hard to define cancer as a disease. Cancer can affect just about every organ in the human body and encompasses a complex group of more than 100 different types of cancerous diseases. To better understand what cancer is you must know how cancer develops.
All organs in the human body are made up of cells. Cells divide and multiply as the body needs them. A tumor occurs when cells continue to multiply when the body doesn’t need them. Tumors can be either benign or malignant. Benign is considered non-cancerous and malignant is cancerous. Where benign tumors rarely are life threatening and do not spread, malignant tumors often invade nearby tissue and organs, spreading the disease. This spreading of the disease occurs when cancerous cells break free from the tumor and enter the bloodstream.
