Should governments take over all the Pharmaceutical companies?
Pharmaceutical companies are on the frontline of medical breakthroughs and the finding of new medicines. These companies decide which diseases will be tackled in the next couple of years. But can we let companies decide who we safe and who has to wait for a cure? I think this is a huge responsibility, too big for a company?
As I see it companies are profit driven entities, giving the preference to diseases which are more common under people in the wealthier countries instead of the huge killer diseases around the world.
If we think a little further you can imaging that pharmaceutical companies want you to be sick, so you can buy their medicine. In business it’s all about the demand and what companies can supply, driving up prizes in the process.
No, it is my opinion that everything related to healthcare, such as the development of medicine, should be controlled by democratic elected governments. Governments want a healthy workforce and aren’t profit driven. If you go even a step further, a global elected body could steer development of medicine in the right way. Where different companies are searching individually for a cure, governments or one international body can find a cure together, saving lots of money in the process.
